What Is "Roast My Resume"?
Roast My Resume is a free, no-signup tool that analyzes your resume text and delivers a brutally honest letter grade with specific feedback. It checks for buzzword overuse, quantification of achievements, action verb quality, red flags hiring managers notice immediately, and the overall impression your resume creates. The analysis is deterministic β same resume, same grade every time β which means you can share your result as a deep link.
What Makes a Resume Terrible?
Most bad resumes share the same crimes: passive language ("responsible forβ¦" instead of "led"), generic buzzwords ("results-driven", "team player", "synergy"), zero metrics or numbers, walls of text with no achievements, objectives sections that waste the hiring manager's first 3 seconds, and skill sections that list "Microsoft Word" like it's 2003. Also: Comic Sans. Always Comic Sans.
How Does the Resume Scoring Work?
Our heuristic engine analyzes your resume across five dimensions: Impact (quantified achievements vs. fluffy claims), Action Verbs (strong verbs like "led", "built", "grew" vs. weak ones like "helped", "worked on"), Buzzword Toxicity (how much corporate jargon is hurting you), Structure (length, formatting signals, section presence), and Differentiation (whether your resume could belong to literally anyone). These scores combine for a final 0-100 grade.
What Score Should I Aim For?
A score of 80+ (A) is excellent β your resume will likely get past ATS filters and impress humans. 65-80 (B) is solid but has clear improvement areas. 50-65 (C) means you'll get some callbacks but are leaving opportunities on the table. Below 50 (D/F) means it's time for a rewrite, not a polish.
Can I Use This to Prep for Job Applications?
Absolutely. Paste your current resume, note the red flags, address them, paste the updated version, and watch your score climb. Unlike generic resume advice, this tool reacts to your specific text and calls out exactly what's hurting you. Think of it as a brutal friend who works in HR.
Is My Resume Data Safe?
Yes. All analysis runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your resume text is never sent to any server, API, or database. We don't store it, we don't see it, and it never leaves your device.
